Problem with USR Sportster 36.6 setup, funny connect for in coming calls

Post by Michael Font » Wed, 12 Jun 1996 04:00:00

We just added a second outside line and modem for use as a slip or ppp
connection.  The first setup has been working great for over a year so
I have a little experience setting up and trouble shooting a dial in
line.

The second modem is a US Robotics Sportster 36.6 Fax/Modem.  I set
it up exactly the same way as our other system and it WORKED fine
for about 2 days and then stoped working.  For the like of me I cannot
figure out why.  And suggestions would be helpful.  I can connect
out with the system fine, it just does not handle incoming calls
anymore.  It answers, connects, and then just spits back garbage
no matter what speed or parity settings I use.  The annoying part is
it used to work, I could log in fine, run slip or ppp, no problems.
Now it works fine for outgoing calls, but incomming calls are screwy.

Below are my rc.serial and inittab entries.

kernel 1.99.6  (I am going to upgrade soon to 2.0 and gettyps)

rc.serial       setserial /dev/cua3 uart 16550A port 0x2E8 irq 3

inittat:        d1:45:respawn:/sbin/uugetty ttyS3 38400 vt100

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks,

Michael

Check the setup... You want to connect to it at the desired DTE
speed and lock the the speed, then set hardware handshake and save
the setup. Oh, and set "reset on drop DTR" to insure that you have a
sensible state all the time.

Lock the port speed and use hardware handshake.

1. Problem with my PnP ISA 36.6 kbps modem

Hi!!

Can anybody help me with my modem setup?? I don't know what happens!!!

I've tried that my modem works..
I have a Cirrus Logic PnP ISA (V34 I believe) 36.6 Kbps modem card.

I use Linux (Red Hat 6.0) and Windows 98. In Win the modem work.
On Linux I've set the IRQ & IO Address up in this 2 ways.
         device         IO         IRQ
 1)       /dev/ttyS3    0x2e8       03
 2)       /dev/ttyS3    0x2e8       10

I didn't use the 5 IRQ because it's used by sound card (ISA PnP too;
this card use the 10 IRQ on Windows)

For this, first, I configured isapnp, (in the /etc/isapnp.conf) for
the hardware setup..
second I used setserial for the S.O. setup:

    setserial /dev/ttyS3 port 0x02e8 irq 3 (or 10) autoconfig

and I configured setserial boot setup too

third, I halted, poweded down and powered on the system..

The modems works, but very slow,
I probed it with minicom..   the commands I send it delays 12/14 secs
for appear
and the answer delays 10 secs aprox.. for appear..

Obviously, this is the reason that my linux does not connect ..

I was reading the modem-HOWTO (by Linux Document Proyect) before and
after
this..

It say  delays in the modem communication is a symtom of "IRQ
misconfiguration"..
but I've follow the modem-HOWTO instructions..

My mind doesn't figure out what happens.. Mate check.. HELP!!!

Thanks in advance!!

Leo.
