Information about NFS automounter

Post by ALBERTO MANUEL FERNANDEZ ALVAR » Fri, 05 May 1995 04:00:00

        Help !.

I need information about the NFS automounter. I've read a brief
description in "The Linux network administrator's guide", but it only
refers to "amd". I don't know how to get and use it.

I am also looking for information about how can Linux manage
file locking and how to use NIS with it for improving the security.

On the other hand, can i use a Linux NFS server for other computers
via ethernet or serial ports.

                                        Thank's in advance.

you can ftp it from ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/linux/system/misc/mount/amd*
or something very close to that.

cant help with file locking, but there is source code availble for NYS (NIS)
you can find that at ftp://nic.funet.fi/pub/linux/BETA/NYS

it can either be compiled into libc (*ed if i can get it too tho), or
as a stand alone library, which has the down side that any program which has
to use it must be re-compiled and linked with it.  the libc approach makes it
transparent (with shadow passwds ?)

yep, thats easily do-able. you will need to run rpc.portmap && rpc.nfsd /
rpc.pcnfsd at boot time (from the /etc/rc.d/rc.inet* scripts)

you will also need edit /etc/exports.  have a look at the man page,
exports(5)

over ether this is pretty easy, but you will need a suitable package / program
on the client machine that can handle NFS.

hope this bried info helps,
vince

Hmm, using NIS surely is no way to _improve_ security ...

The linux C library does support NIS out of the box. All you need
else is ypbind and perhaps some clients like ypcat, ypwhich etc. You
can find these on
ftp://ftp.uni-paderborn.de/public/linux/local/yp/yp-clients-1.6.tar.gz
and
ftp://ftp.uni-paderborn.de/public/linux/local/yp/ypbind-2.0beta2.tar.gz

(yp-clients-1.6.tar.gz also contains ypbind, but this one is a bit
buggy).
The clients also can be found on sunsite in system/Network/admin/.

Greetings, Swen

1. "The Automounter"? What automounter?

The NET2-HOWTO/FAQ tells how you can use "the automounter" to allow
mount-on-demand.  I'm used to auto-mounting on Suns, so I would like
to use this "automounter", but after grepping through all the manuals
and /usr/doc, I cannot find any further references.

Can someone please shove me in the right direction.
