remote tar

remote tar

Post by notimporta » Tue, 07 Feb 1995 13:28:50

I have the following problem with remote tar:

command:

tar -cvf melab:/dev/rmt0 *

response:

tar: can't open /dev/rmt0 : No such device

The tape drive is functional and the tape is in the drive. I have
verified that the drive is ok by issuing tar from the melab.

Any help will be appreciated.

Problem solved. It turns out that gnu tar on linux looks
for /sbin/rmt from the remote host, but that file is in
/usr/sbin/rmt rather. By putting rmt in /sbin solves the problem.

1. how to "remote tar"?

Using tar we can do the following

        tar cvf - /filesystem | rcmd <machine> dd of=<tape-device>

using cpio

        find /filesystem -print | cpio -oc | rcmd <machine> dd of=<tape-device>
