Change machine name??

Change machine name??

Post by Jack Zh » Sun, 28 Feb 1999 04:00:00

Redhat Linux 2.2.1

1. Can I assign IP address "10.1.1.1" to my machine?

2. Can I change the default machine name?

"localhost" to "jacklinux", is this a nickname? How to do this?

I tried to change "/etc/HOSTNAME" and "/etc/hosts". But after the update,
(IP address from 127.0.0.1 to 10.1.1.1 and name changing), during the boot,
it takes unusual longer time to start the "Sendmail" service.

And when try to start "SMB" service, message is:
"Use ServerName to set it manually".

Wait for longer time again(10 minutes around), boot is OK. but the name is
still the old one.

And when I try to "ping 10.1.1.1". Failed.

Any help, please!!!

Thanks in advance!!

Jack

Leave the loopback (127.0.0.1) like it is!!! Configure the files
/etc/hosts
/etc/HOSTNAME
/etc/sysconfig/network

the others are for named

/etc/named/boot
/var/named/whatever.you.called.your.domain.host.file

the first 3 are simple for the others you might wan't to take a look at the
HOWTO's and "man named".But first of all redefine your loopback or nothing
that uses TCP/IP will work.

1. Q, changing machine name and domain name inRH

Hi,

Linux box with redhat 7, I am wondering how to change the machine name and
domain name.
If there co-exists the same machine name and domain name in the NT primary
doamin controller, what would go wrong?
Any help will be appreciated.
