Can Linux 'talk' to SUN?

Can Linux 'talk' to SUN?

Post by Scott Jord » Wed, 18 Dec 1996 04:00:00

Is there a way to get the Linux 'talk' command to work with a SUN running
System V Release 4? How about the other way around: can the SUN use the
'talk' command to communicate with a Linux user?

  Thanks,

yes, if you install 'to-talk' (that's who it's called on my neighbours PC
at least, I don't have it myself).
to-talk is the client in.to-talkd the daemon.
inetd.conf looks like this:

talk    dgram   udp   wait  root  /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/in.to-talkd
ntalk   dgram   udp   wait  root  /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/in.ntalkd

now regular talk and sun's talk both work.

1. 'Talk' can't talk on Freebsd 4.4?

Hi guys,

I ran 'talk' today on my freshly installed 4.4-release box, the thing keeps
on reporting "checking for invitation on caller's machine." I enabled ntalkd
in inetd.conf and it doesn't really ressolve the problem. I then try out
/usr/libexec/ntalkd and it reported something like "open socket on
non-socket" or something similar to that. Anyone knows what's the matter
with my installation?
