Ethernet connection dropping

Ethernet connection dropping

Hey all,

I am currently trying to set up a Linux web server over an ethernet.  The
machine is a Pentium 100 with a 3c509b ethernet card.  We previously had
Slackware installed, which seemed to work just fine (it stayed stable for a
period of 3 days until we took it down).  However, we elected to installed Red
Hat instead, seeing as how it came with Apache pre-installed, etc.

I ran the network config program under X, and got the Internet connection
working, and was able to telnet to other machines,  as well as telnet into the
server remotely.  However, after a few minutes, the connection dropped and I
could no longer establish either an outgoing or incoming connection.    After
rebooting, the connection was up again, but after a few minutes the connection
dropped again.  This happened 4 or 5 times.

The connection did not drop after a specific event and did not appear to
happen after being connected for a certain time; it seemed completely random.
We checked for IP conflicts and there were none.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be going wrong?

Thanks!

You enabled 'gated' or 'routed'.
Disable them or get the update from RedHat.

1. multiple xDSL connections from one ethernet connection.

Weird request I guess.

I have a classroom and access to an ethernet socket on the wall.

I would like each student to have their own DSL line to
their desk so they can install and configure their own DSL
modem pci card.  Then ideally go through the rest of the
course using that as their internet connection for
downloading software.

Since they would (or should) all be downloading the same
software, a web cache machine could be placed at the
ethernet connection.

I never get to see this side of the ADSL hardware. It all
happens back at the local telephone exchange, but this is
what I'd like to achieve.

It easy enough to turn a linux beige-box into an ethernet
switch, and I would like to think I could do the same but
with DSL modem cards instead of ethernet cards, but I need
pointers so some software here.

What problems can anyone forsee?

Cheers
