Newbie wants to connect linux box to net

Post by Vikas Saraog » Sat, 28 Jul 2001 12:37:53

Hi,

I have just installed Suse's package 7.1 linux 2.2.4 on my machine and now I
want to connect to the net from linux.

Here is my current setup:
- 2 computers running on win 98.
- computer A connects to net using a dsl modem (speedstream 4060 USB)
- computer B connects to A using ethernet.
- the NIC cards are Linksys Etherfast 10/100 and there is a hub in
  between the computers.
- the s/w for internet connection from other computer is Microsoft
  Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)

Since there are no linux drivers for that modem I can't access to
internet when on linux but I guess I can get access via computer
B. That computer has windows 2000 too and I would like to connect to
net using that operating system.

Now I would like to know two things:
- how to connect from linux machine to windows 2000 machine
- how to share the internet with windows 2000 machine

Can someone give me instructions for the setup? Please understand that
I am newbie in networking stuff so please be descriptive if you can.

Thanks for your reply,
Vikas

You need to setup a private network between your Win2000 machine and the Linux
box.  Either connect both of them together with a cross-over cable or connect
both of them through a switch/hub using a normal cable.  You then need to get
internet connection sharing started on your Windows 2000 machine and set the
default gateway and so forth to point to the win2000 machine.

You might want to take a look at some of the documents located at
http://www.linuxdoc.org to help you out.  The first step however, is to get
the Win2000 and Linux box to see one another.  They should both be able to
ping one another.

See ya

1. Newbie wants to get connected with his Linux Box

I am having a lot of trouble getting my Linux bix to get on the net. I
downloaded a file called ppp-2_2_0g_tar.gz. Keep in mind I have only
had Linux installed for about 1 day and have never worked on UNIX in
my life. Can someone give me step by step instructions to get that
file from a floppy disk onto my Linux box. I do not even know how to
access files from the floppy drive.
