PCTel Winmodem for Linux

Has anybody got this working yet. I can get Linux to open the modem, but
stops immediately with 'Cannot get dial tone'. There's a message in
/var/log/messages saying 'set IRQ', but the parms obtained by modinfo -p
don't work. Any ideas, or somewhere where I can get some decent docs
(are you listening PCTel?)

You aren't likely to be able to use this modem under Linux since the
manufacturers of such modems write the software drivers only for
Windows.  In order to get the driver specifications a non-disclosure
agreement is required - so little effort is being devoted to writing
the software from scratch.

These are two links to checkout:

  http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html/

I'd say that you would be better off to just get a real modem,
instead of asking a true multi-tasking OS to divert a significant
amount of CPU time to do the work that properly should be done by
hardware within the modem...

That's not the answer I was looking for. I have a real external modem, but
I'm fed up of knocking it over, and I'd just like to get the WinModem
working. I've checked out the 2 links you gave me but they're no help at all.

Hi,

The PC-Tel Micromodems (56kbps) works well with the drivers released recently.
I tested them myself and the results were very good. There are perfectly useable.
I don't know what rate the connection was, but on a telephone line that never was able
to connect over 36000bps i got upto about 3Kbytes/s continuous stream, measured
with "xnetload ppp0". Sometimes due to noisy condition i got only 19000bps
on this phone line.

I dont remeber were i downloaded the drivers, but it semes there are RedHat RPM avaiable.

bye.

1. PCTel WinModem with pctel-2.4.7 Driver

Hi,

I have installed two units of pctel winmodems on my linux machine.  The
pctel-2.4.7 driver only recoqnizes one of the pctel modems.  Has anyone had
tried the pctel driver to drive more than one pctel winmodems?

While at the subject, is it possible to program the pctel modem to generate
a dialtone so that I can connect some devices to the modem port to dial
into the modem (no need to have a telephone line emulator)?

TIA.
