diplogin -> dip-3.3.7-uri or dip-3.3.7i?

Post by Andrew_R._Mi » Fri, 03 Feb 1995 00:41:08

I am still trying to straighten out using Linux as
a SLIP server.  Should diplogin link to dip-3.3.7-uri
or should it point to dip-3.3.7i?  I want to use
diplogin in the passwd file as the "shell":

Slip::501:100:Slip user:/tmp:/sbin/diplogin

Right now I have:

lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root        10 Sep 26 12:11 dip -> dip-3.3.7i*
-rwxr-xr-x   1 root     bin      25604 Feb 12  1994 dip-3.3.7*
-rwxr-xr-x   1 root     bin      29700 Apr 15  1994 dip-3.3.7-uri*
-rwxr-xr-x   1 root     bin      33880 Sep 11 23:21 dip-3.3.7i*
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root        13 Jan 31 20:54 diplogin -> dip-3.3.7-uri*

When I try to dialin to the Linux machine with this configuration,
after the user name and password I get:

DIP: Dialup IP Protocol
Then the phone line hangs up.

Any ideas?

diplogin -> dip-3.3.7-uri or dip-3.3.7i?

Try to get the latest DIP (now - dip337l-uri.tgz).
Copy your dips from /sbin to some safe place.

Recompile the new DIP and install it in /sbin like
this:

        cp dip /sbin/dip
        ln -s /sbin/dip /sbin/diplogin
        chown root.uucp /sbin/dip
        chmod u+s /sbin/dip

Behold, that unless your dip is set-uid root, you're
screwed.

Also, if you don't read README files - guess who you are.

1. DIP-3.3.7-uri (was Re: Bizzare DIP/CSLIP problem

Please try my modification to DIP-3.3.7.
It's in
        dip337-uri.tar.gz
in
        /pub/Linux/Incoming
on
        sunsite.unc.edu

I've fixed a few bugs, and added "netmask xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx"
and "default" commands (or fixed "default" - I don't remember).
The gist is - I'm able to run Compressed SLIP with 0.99.15a
kernel. There's an example of how to use those additional
commands in the sample... Oh, I've added "quit" command,
so if it quits in the middle of attempting to establish
the link - you still are able to use your serial port
without rebooting the whole box (:-).

Dip  handles  the  connections needed for dialup IP links,
like SLIP or PPP. It can handle both incoming and outgoing
connections,  using password security for incoming connec-
tions.  The outgoing connections use the system's  dial(3)
library if available.

This version of DIP handles only SLIP and Compressed SLIP.
