ftp with netscape through MS Proxy Server (SOCKS)

Post by christoph.panwink.. » Wed, 15 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I would like to have ftp running with netscape through MS Proxy Server.
I have told netscape to user the SOCKS server on default port 1080.
I was able to get http working throught the proxy, also DNS works.

The problem now is with ftp. I know that a connection is established
because if I point to an invalid location within a valid URL I get an
error message "netscape is unable to find the file or directory..."

Connections through ports 20 and 21 are allowed by the SOCKS server.

I think the problem ist that ftp opens a socket to send information
through it, e.g. 3361. Does that mean that I have to allow all
connections on ports > 1024 ?

thanks,
Panny

Try getting rid of the MS Proxy Server, and load Squid on a real operating
system.

Agreed.  Even MCSE's think MS proxy server sucks.

I would appreciate using squid, but I then have to convince my sysadmin
and that is nearly impossible.

I have hear that there are passive ftp clients that restrict to only
port 20 and 21. Do you know such a client.
