Problems starting network in SuSE 9.1

Post by Antonio Cast » Sat, 13 Nov 2004 07:27:49

Have installed SuSE 9.1 on a IBM Netvista. It works perfectly well
using pppoe to connect to terra services thru a router cisco 800. This
router will act as a dhcp and provide a ip address when not using
pppoe and just typing ipup eth0. This happened with RedHat 9.0.
However, after installing SuSE 9.1, when activating eth0 with the
command ifup eth0 get the following message (same when trying to
activate the device when booting as I see in /var/log/boot.msg):

acastroc:/etc/sysconfig/network # ifup eth0
eth0      device: Intel Corp. 82801BA/BAM/CA/CAM Ethernet
Controller (rev 01)
    eth0      configuration: eth-id-00:02:55:ca:a8:76
ERROR: Error while excuting:
Command 'ip route replace to dev eth0' returned:
       RTNETLINK answers: No such device
       Configuration line: - eth0

I do not recall entering the ipaddress at any time. Can
anyone help me with this?. I have been looking for a solution with no

Thanks in advance for your help.

1. network problem with kernel 2.6.10 on SuSe 9.1

Hello World,

because of driver problems i decided to upgrade my kernel on my SuSE
Linux 9.1 machine.
I downloaded the 2.6.10 sources from, compiled it with the
same settings as the SuSE 9.1 kernel was compiled and finally installed it.

Everything works just fine. But i am not able to get any network connection.
I have 2 network cards, the modules are loaded and are running. The
network cards (eth0,eth1) start perfectly. But i can't get out, every
ping has connection loss like the network cable plug is pulled, but it
isn't. I am perplexed... The boot messages and the syslog don't show any
The old kernel (2.6.4-52) still works and there are no connection
problems at all.

Any ideas?
