network problem - local network setup

Post by tom » Tue, 25 Nov 2003 07:47:34

Hi all,

have a problem while setting up my home network; there are two PC's
asterix, Realtek - 8029(AS)  192.168.0.98
idefix, Realtek - RT8139     192.168.0.20

Both cards work fine with ping on the lo and the own nodename, when I try to
ping to the other node I get an error like mentioned below ...

-----------------

From asterix.meprivat (192.168.0.98): icmp_seq=1 Destination Host
Unreachable
From asterix.meprivat (192.168.0.98) icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable

From asterix.meprivat (192.168.0.98) icmp_seq=4 Destination Host Unreachable
From asterix.meprivat (192.168.0.98) icmp_seq=5 Destination Host Unreachable
From asterix.meprivat (192.168.0.98) icmp_seq=6 Destination Host Unreachable

--- idefix.meprivat ping statistics ---
8 packets transmitted, 0 received, +7 errors, 100% loss, time 7032ms

Need advice, any help is welcome ! Thanx a lot in advance !!

You dont say how you connect the two computers, so it's hard to tell what's
the problem.
Router,Hub,direct link, crossed cable?

- I'm connecting those two pc's by a Thinewire Ethernet cable,
10baseT-type.

Is that a cross over cable? If not you'll have to go via a hub.

As far as I can remember, when connecting pc's by use of thinwire eth (10
Mbits) it's not necessary to use a hub - this system is used as a backbone.
May be I'm wrong - but each pc is connected by a T-plug, only at each end of
the network you have to use terminators (50 or 75 ohm ???).

Any further ideas what could be wrong ??

I think you're confusing cable types, which is prompting incorrect answers.
10baseT is twisted pair cable, such as CAT 3 or CAT 5.  Thin ethernet
(10base2) is coaxial cable, as is thick ethernet (10base5).

If you're using 10baseT, you need a cross over cable or hub (or switch).  If
using thin ethernet, you're using coax cable, which will require T
connectors and terminators.

I'd like the /etc/hosts file from both machines.

This is not 10baseT - what you're talking about is 10base2.

If you are using Combo cards, make sure that the kernel is sending
the packets to the correct interface type.

It's hard to give you more precise answers if you don't provide
more details. Please show the output of "ifconfig" and "route -n"
on those machines. What kind of cards are you using? ISA? If
so, check the IRQ settings in the systems' CMOS.

Hi,
as I learned above, I'm not useing 10baseT BUT the coax-type 10base2.
Here are more details about the configuration...

1. Setup sendmail for local home-network AND uucp global network

Hi.

I run two systems and have one setup as a server (mail, news, proxy, NFS
and the like). Now I seldom work on the serve more on my desktop.

And here comes my problem. Since I had updated the complete server
the sendmail got updated too. And now my old sendmail.cf on my desktop
didn't work like it should.

Before the update I had on both systems a sendmail running and the
sendmail on my desktop had received the mail and just send it to the
serve which had then send it out via uucp. Unfortunately it does not
work any more.

Any idea how I had to setup the sendmail.cf to work it work again?

TIA
