NFS in 2.4.0 error-> portmap: server not responding, time out.

Post by Dr Jaime V. Mir » Sun, 18 Feb 2001 06:04:54

Hi,

Backgroung: I am trying get a diskless linux box running 2.4.0 to
NFS boot from a linux server running 2.2.12-20

I've recently  updated my diskless workstation to 2.4.0-test5.
I've compiled and downloaded a kernel onto the workstation, which accesses
a bootp and NFS server to boot. I've managed to get the workstation to talk
to the server and get its IP, but I can not get to mount the (NFS) fs.
I get the error:

...
..
Looking up port of RPC 100003/2 on <server IP>
portmap: server <server IP> not responding, time out.
Root-NFS: unable to get nfsd port number from server, using default.
..
...

and, consequently is unable to mount the root fs from the NFS server.

Now, it seems to me there is an error on the server side, yet I have managed
in the past to get the workstation to successfully do with 2.2.13 what I am
trying to do now with 2.4.0, and the server side exactly as it stands right now (running
2.2.12-20), so unless something in the server should be customised/upgraded for 2.4.0,
I believe the right files and servers are running (i.e., nfsd, portmapd, etc...)

I think I selected all the right things in the config file to make the kernel.
Furthermore, it does not seem to me like a problem in the target kernel. Yet
in case something might be missing, I include the .config file I used to make
the 2.4.0 kernel below.

For further help:

This is the traffic between the workstation (ebsa285) and my host machine (fishlaptop)
acquired with tcpdumd:

Can anybody see something wrong, or is it plain impossible to get 2.4.0 to NFS talk
to 2.2.12? I am in the process of also upgrading my server to 2.4.0, but I am
having problems with the compilation, so would prefer to use current server, if at all
possible

Sorry if the msg is long, I am trying to provide as much info as possible.
Any pointers greatly appreciated

TIA, Jaime
