mrouted not work in Linux!!??

I set up my /etc/mrouted.conf and run:

-------------------------------------------------------------------
# ./mrouted -c /etc/mrouted.conf -d 3
debug level 3
11:40:20.225 mrouted version 3.8
11:40:20.600 can't enable Multicast routing in kernel: Protocol not
available
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Hum.. it seems be something problem in kernel..

My kernel is ver.2.0.0.
and I DID enable that ip multicasting, ip forwarding/gatewaying,
and some xxx as router..

and following is mf ethernet info..

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
# ifconfig -a
eth0    Link encap:10Mbps Ethernet  HWaddr 00:80:C8:1E:81:53
        inet addr:140.138.xxx.xxx  Bcast:140.138.255.255 Mask:255.255.0.0
        UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
        RX packets:32055 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
        TX packets:180 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
        Interrupt:10 Base address:0x320

Ja, life is hard 8-). And not so many people are 'playing' around with Mbone
under Linux.

I once had the same problem. The trick (as I remember) is to enable the
experimental stuff in the kernel:
CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL=y

Settings for networking are:
# CONFIG_FIREWALL is not set
# CONFIG_NET_ALIAS is not set
CONFIG_INET=y
CONFIG_IP_FORWARD=y
CONFIG_IP_MULTICAST=y
# CONFIG_IP_ACCT is not set
# CONFIG_IP_ROUTER is not set
# CONFIG_NET_IPIP is not set
CONFIG_IP_MROUTE=y

Without setting 'experimental' you would not be asked for mrouting.

Also do not forget to set:
/sbin/route add -net 224.0.0.0 netmask 240.0.0.0 eth0

Anyway...
I once managed to get mrouted running and also got the MBone traffic to the
Linux machine running mrouted, but it did not forward the traffic into the
local net.

I did not test it for a longer time now, because the university MBone link
is down at the moment.
I once tested mrouted between two Linux machines, which did not work either.
Maybe I will continue testing this after my vacation.

If you or anybody else have any experience setting up mrouting under Linux I
would like to hear about it.

Ciao
  Guido
