DHCP & Mediaone's cable modem.

Post by Doug O'Lear » Wed, 21 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Hi;

I just loaded RedHat 6.0 and tried out my new cable modem with the same
results as the previous versions of Linux.  The dhcp client is 1.3 (which,
according to the documentaiton is supposed to fix some these problems).  I
keep getting a time out waiting for valid DHCP reply message in my logs.

Mediaone doesn't provide any help for this; they say they only support MS
viruses - operating systems.

Does anyone have a cable modem working with MediaOne?  Any tips on what I
might try now?
Thanks for any help.

One difference between DHCP as implemented by MS and DHCP as implemented by
Linux is that MS DHCP sends the hostname along with the DHCP request.  Linux
allows you to do this via the -h parameter on dhcpcd.  My provider requires
the hostname since that's how they assign IP addresses (bogus!), but this
did the trick.  Whether yours does or not, it might be worth a try.  There
are also some other parms on dhcpcd you might look at.

yes, I have a mediaone connection. Lots of issues with them and
getting a connection at all, much less an IP. Took a while, but I didn't
have any problems with RH5.2 and the client it came with. I suggest you
try the ISC (www.isc.org) dhclient (comes with the dhcp daemon from
their site) instead. This may help. I assume you still have access
somewhere and that you can download this and cart it home (I believe
that it is less than a floppy big). The latest dhclient is as advanced
as dhcpcd. On the other hand, there are newer versions of dhcpcd that
can be downloaded and compiled (RH6 I believe uses a slightly older
build of the latest release). I had to do this with my older Slack
distro (3.6) to get that to work. But don't assume that it is your
computer and software. We had the flakiest connections for months. Only
in the last week or two has our connection been reliable.

Thanks for the response.

I'm aware of the -h option; I've tried every hostname that I can think of
and haven't gotten anywhere.  From what I understand, you're supposed to use
your account name as the hostname.  Is that what you're doing?

Who, if you don't mind my asking, is your service provider (Bell Atlantic)?

Some of those other options looked like they might show some promise;
however, I'm not familiar with the format for the arguments.  Know anything
about them?

Thanks again for your response.

What Kernel are you running on your 5.2 box?
I can't get DHCP running on my Mediaone cable modem with any 2.2.X kernels.

Bell Atlantic (DC area) is my ISP.  I use my hostname (assigned by BA, which
is *), and it must be all uppercase, since that's how MS apparently
sends it.

You might take a look at your /var/log/messages file and see if you see any
helpful output from dhcpcd.

All uppercase?  That I wasn't aware of; I'll have to give that a try.

The logged messages are basically worthless.  I get two messages saying dhcp
is broadcasting, then, a little while later, it says it timed out waiting
for a valid response from DHCP server.    And that's with the -d(ebug)
option...

Thanks for the tip.

DHCP & Mediaone's cable modem.

Post by Doyen Klei » Fri, 23 Jul 1999 04:00:00

I am a newbie who can contribute little, but......
I do use mediaone, and my hostname IS NOT my account name. I am
connected
using 98, and all they need is my MAC address on my NIC. I was planning
to
do just what you're trying (using RH5.2) but now I'm thinking keeping
the winblows connected, and using a win proxy server.  Once I've done
more reading, I'll switch the NIC back and forth, and see which way
works better, Personnally I'd like to give the Winblows machine to my
2yo daughter. BTW I need to connect a MAC G3 to all this aswell, so
outside of the HOW-TOs and FAQ's any other advice, or config files would
be welcome.

I had the same problem with Redhat 6.0, I ended up having to plug the NIC
back into the Win98 box and download a new version of pump (the DHCP
client).
After that, no problem with DHCP on linux.

Where do you put the hostname needed by the DHCP server.
I'm currently running 5.2 with no problems.  A wuick edit
of the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup and add the
-h hostname to the line calling dhcpcd.

I just don't see where to put the hostname in the 6.0
setup files.

Thanks

1. DHCP vs MediaOne cable modem

i have an interesting problem...

i have mediaone cable modem service in los angeles.

client dhcp works fine both under windows and linsux, ie the machine gets its ip/nameserver/default route etc fine.

however it does *not* seem to work for my solaris sparc IPX...  if i plumb the
le0 interface and use /sbin/ifconfig le0 auto-dhcp primary, it times out every
time.

i *can* manually set the ip info, default route and access the net fine...

is there something odd about solaris client dhcp and/or dhcpagent?

im running 2.6 no patches (i just installed 2 mins ago)

any clues, i need this to work...

thanks
