Data overruns?

Data overruns?

Hello,

I tried posting about this before, but I don't think the item ever
made it to the world.

Anyways...

Here's the output of a netstat -in command:

Kernel Interface table
Iface   MTU Met  RX-OK RX-ERR RX-DRP RX-OVR  TX-OK TX-ERR TX-DRP TX-OVR Flags
lo     2000   0      0      0      0      0  31203      0      0      0 BLRU
sl0     500   0 217497      0      0 161974 337590      0      0 248020 PRU
eth0   1500   0 403383      0      0      0 394743      2      0      0 BRU

The slip interface is for a 14.4 modem, dte speed set to 57,600 baud,
and the serial port has an 16550AF chip on it. I've kernel 1.2.8 on
a 486DX/33.

What does the RX-OVR and TX-OVR numbers mean? The man page is somewhat
cryptical. Are they data overruns?

Thanks.

The man page says "packets that we were unable to transmit". It seems
to me that those are data which need not be transfered thanks to
the CSLIP compression. Further checks you can do:

-- Do "/sbin/ifconfig sl0" for a more verbose description of the
      network traffic;

-- If you are getting around 3 kB/sec when ftp-ing text data from/to
the other end of your SLIP line (i.e. a speedup of around factor 2)
      the everything is OK.

   R.B.
