PPP doesn't dial modem!!!

Post by Asif Chowdhur » Tue, 22 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Hi, after installing linux (RedHat 5.1) I can't get the ppp to work.  I
have
created Network Interface, but when I try to use usernet - nothing
happens.

I have recovered following lines from /var/log/messages.  I have
read README.linux.  But they're talking about configuring kernel
and stuff.  Too complicated for me as a beginner.
PLease help.  I am stuck here for last five days.
Any help is appreciated.
Regards,
Asif

P.S : I am using a USR 56k incase you need to know.  Everything was
working fine in this same system before re-installation.  I have
increased the HD partition size, therefore this re-installation.

Dec 21 12:21:46 localhost ifup-ppp: pppd started for ppp0 on /dev/ttyS1
at 115200
Dec 21 12:21:46 localhost pppd[911]: ioctl(TIOCSETD): Invalid
argument(22)
Dec 21 12:21:46 localhost pppd[911]: This system lacks kernel support
for PPP.
This could be because the PPP kernel module is not loaded, or because
the kernel
is not configured for PPP.  See the README.linux file in the ppp-2.3.3
distribution.

One must have PPP support in the kernel to use pppd. You might try
typing 'insmod ppp' to see if the module is already compiled. Otherwise
look into making a new kernel with PPP support.

1. dialing program; modem receives dialstring but doesn't dial?

Hi,

I have a simple program to dial out via a hayes modem. When run, the
modem RD and TD lights blink showing that it receives the dial string
from the program but doesn't really dial out.
Here is the relevant piece of code. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

void sttyModem(int fd)

        struct termio tbuf;
        if (ioctl(fd, TCGETA, &tbuf) < 0 )
                cerr << "ioctl(TCGETA) failed; errno = "<< errno << endl;
        tbuf.c_iflag = IXON | IXOFF | ISTRIP | IGNBRK | IGNPAR;
        tbuf.c_oflag = 0;
        tbuf.c_lflag = 0;
        tbuf.c_cflag = B300 | CS7 | CREAD | HUPCL | PARENB;
        tbuf.c_cc[4] = 1;       // MIN
        tbuf.c_cc[5] = 0;       // TIME
        if (ioctl(fd, TCSETAF, &tbuf))
                cerr << "ioctl(TCSETAF) failed; errno = "<< errno << endl;

main()

        sttyModem(tty_fd);

        char ss[10];

        write(tty_fd, str, strlen(str));
        read(tty_fd, ss, 1);
