Networking Help Please--Desperate

Post by Mike Bieman » Fri, 26 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Hi,
Still learning Linux, really like it.
But I am having a few problems.
I used the same Nic on a slackware version
of Linux and it autoprobed and had no errors.
I now am using Linux Mandrake 6.1 and am trying
to set up my NIC.  3COM 3C509B.  Before this
I had an old NIC which was NE 2000 compatible.
And still had the same error.
Delaying eth0 initilization FAILED.
How do I go about and reinstall all Networking stuff.
How do I autoprobe for my NIC.
I try to ping LOCALHOST and it worked, until I went
through some documents and then started playing around
with some files.  I think I might have deleted something that
I shouldn't have.
Does anybody have any simple ideas as my knowledge with
Linux is still in the beginning stages.
I need to get SAMBA, and APACHE working as now we
are in the experimental stages with Linux and would like to
make it our main server.
THanks in advance

what does ifconfig tell you?

is the kernel compiled to have your nic supported, and is tcpip ( and
networking tools, like nfs, smb, etc...) supported by your kernel?

Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/
Before you buy.

When I installed Linux I had it install all the stuff I needed for
networking.
ifconfig
lo Link endcap:local loopback
    inet addr 127.0.0.1 mask 255.0.0.0
and then goes on with the rest of the stuff for the loopback
for eth0  it can not find the device

Thanks again for trying to help.  But I am going to do a fresh install.
and see what happens.

1. Desperate Please Help Linux Networking Issues

About 6 months ago, a friend who has moved help me hook up my Windows 98
machine and my Linux machine. We hooked them up through a network hub, I
also at the time had a one-way cable modem that we plugged in the uplink on
the hub. We configured the Windows machine so that I could use a X-windows
client to get into the Linux machine.
Now with the problem (issues). I have recently had the cable company upgrade
me to a bi-directional cable modem, the guy who set it up removed all of the
network settings from the Windows machine (gateway, dns, hostname). I set
the machines up exactly like they were before minus the setting the
installed removed and now I am unable to ping the linux machine or ping from
the linux machine. I have a link light on the hub showing that there is
something and when I try to ping, the light on the hub blinks showing some
activity. I am sure that it is something simple, but I have little
experience with linux and windows networking.
Any and all help that you can provide will be grateful.

When I run netstat -rn I get
Destination            Gateway              GenMask
192.168.100.4      0.0.0.0                255.255.255
192.168.100.0      0.0.0.0                255.255.255.0
127.0.0.0              0.0.0.0                255.0.0.0
0.0.0.0                  192.168.100.1    0.0.0.0
