intel pro 100 on motherboard

Post by Morp » Sat, 11 Aug 2001 18:31:17

hi all,

We just got a PC with an  Intel Pro 100 built onto the motherboard (as
opposed to being a PCI card). So whats the deal with these? Are they new?
Will drivers exist in RH7.1 to automatically edtect it upon boot nd
configure the network properly (with our inputting netmask IP etc etc)?

Thanks in advance.

The driver module is eepro100.o. It is included in the standard kernel.

You *have to* type in the netmask, gateway and so on. If you want to
determine this parameters automatically, you must have a DHCP server on
your network which give your box a proper netmask, gateway etc. any time
the network driver is started.

Dear Morph,

If the intel pro uses a 62562 chip then you are in trouble because the only
driver that will
currently work is the e100 from Intel. The eepro100 driver in all kernels up
to 2.4.7 will
not work with this chip for very long. I know that the eepro100 developer is
dealing with this
and maybe has even release a driver that works with the chip but I don't
think it is in any
of the distributions yet. The e100 driver from Intel  works but is only
available as a loadable
module so the kernel can't (as far as I can tell) obtain its network
configuration from a bootp
or dhcp server at boot time. It can only do so after the kernel is finished
booting and the module
has been inserted using insmod. Then you can manually configure the ethernet
with IP addresses
etc.

Hope this helps....

Yep, the network card should be detected as normal.  The normal Intel
EtherExpress Pro driver (if it is a network card like that) will be probed and
found as eth0 without any problems.

Not even remotely.  I have an Intel PR440FX motherboard, manufactured
sometime in the mid- to early-90s with an onboard "PRO/100."

Yes.  They have been in the kernel for a long time and are quite
mature and stable.

Oops, that should read 82562.

If the chip is an 8255x series (e.g. 82557, 82558 etc) then the eepro100 driver
supplied
with the kernel will work just fine but if it is an 82562 then :-(

best wishes....

Is this the one included in the camino chipset? (lspci follows)
I have serious problems(driver hangs) with it.

1. Intel Pro 100+ 100% compatible with Pro 100B ?

I would like to know if the currently available Intel Fast Ethernet
PCI NIC, the Pro 100+ is 100% backwards compatible with the previous
Pro 100B.
That is, using the existing drivers for the 100B in FreeBSD and in
Windows NT 4.0 SP3, can I simply exchange the 100B with a 100+ ?

        Thanks.
