There is a very clear HOWTO on the subject in the /usr/doc/HOWTO/
directory.
You could also download the ezppp program, or use the netcfg tool that
comes with RedHat. Perhaps if you told us what steps you had taken,
what _exactly_ went wrong, and what kind of error messages you got from
/var/log/messages then we could provide more help on your problem!

Yes, it does work. I am using it. Currently fussing with the
firewall stuff so all my other machines can browse, but the Linux
machine is fine.
Practice your debugging 101 skills :-).
1) Make sure your modem is not conflicting with anything. This means
procinfo, and some poking in /proc, and /var/log/messages. And maybe
some work with isapnp and setserial. May mean buying a 'real' modem.
2) Make sure the modem responds. This means minicom. I've seen
people complain that it doesn't work and they've never even checked to
see if they can get an "OK" back from the modem.
3) Dial your ISP manually and see what he does. This means minicom
some more. Or open a terminal window with W95 DUN and watch what goes
on.
4) NOW try to set up the PPP stuff that folks are troubled with. I've
had good success with Linuxconf.

If you have 2 systems on a point to point link you would address them
by a /30 block? When creating 'gre' tunnel you can use /32 for example
ip addr add 1.0.0.1 peer 1.0.0.2 dev mydev.
why can't /32 of arbitray addressing be used on a point to point
between 2 systems?
