Hi,
I am able to log on to my ISP. I can ping to any Domain Name and get the IP
address along with the 64 bits of data. When I use the browser to connect to
the URL it just does not work. Both the FQDN and the IP address. When I use
lynx I get a (metamail: cannot open temporary directory error). I am at the
end of the rope here and quite frustrated.
The route -n command gave me the following
Destination|gateway|genmask|Flags|Metric|Ref|Use|Iface
207.74.111.6|0.0.0.0|255.255.255.255|UH|0|0|0|ppp0
127.0.0.0|0.0.0.0|255.0.0.0|U|0|0|0|lo
0.0.0.0|207.74.111.6|255.255.255.255|UG|0|0|0|ppp0
The | is equivalent to tab.
I am clueless. Can some help me out.

Your route looks fine. your ping you say works. Your lynx error seems to
be a permission problem in some tmp directory (is /tmp and /var/tmp
writable by all?). Try some of the other commands-- telnet, ftp, to see
if they work.

 
 
 

1. Slow Network Linux->Win98=Slow Win98->Linux=Fast

Here is my home/office setup:

Machine 1: SUSE 6.0 set up as a simple file server using Samba 2.x.
Machine 2: Win98
Connected via FastEthernet.

If I copy a directory (~300MB) from Win98 to Linux box via Samba takes about 6 minutes... if I go the other way, takes 96 minutes!

I have both hosts/ips pointing to each other in their respective hosts files so DNS should not be a problem.

I'm still new at this so any help would be appreciated.
