Proxy Firewall, ipfwadm etc etc

Post by Michael F. Hogset » Mon, 16 Jun 1997 04:00:00

Ok, so I have _finally_ purchased an ethernet card for my box.  I have
it configured properly, since I can ping my wife's mac and she can ping
me.

So what I want to do... (as if you've never heard this before)
...is set up my machine as a gateway, proxy & firewall with IP
masquerading.

I am using kernel 2.0.18 (Red hat 4.0, from InfoMagic Developer CD-ROM).

The CD includes kernel sources for "up to" 2.0.27 and 2.1.14.

So where do I go from here.

when I type

ipfwadm -M -l

it responds with

ipfwadm: cannot open file /proc/net/ip_masquerade

So does this mean that a) I do not have ip masquerading compiled into
the kernel or b) I do not have a module installed ?

Help Me Please!

Thanks very much

I'm working on the same thing (almost).
I believe that means you do not have the IP masquerading
driver. If you don't have it, then you don't have it compiled in
AND you don't have it as a driver.

I would suggest you
(a) read the mini howto titled IP-Masquerading
(b) install gcc
(c) get 2.0.30 source
(d) compile a kernel (the mini howto gives some kernel options)

Disclaimer: I haven't gotten it working myself
(But I do have /proc/net/ip_masquerade)

I have read that 2.0.30 has some fixe(s) related to masquerading.

Best of luck
