NIS Slow when used in compat mode

NIS Slow when used in compat mode

Post by Hefi » Tue, 30 Jun 1998 04:00:00

Hi all,
I've recently configured a Redhat 5.0 Linux system with yp (NIS) and
I've been having problems when using the yp setup in compat mode. The
response from the system is very slow. Using a 'getpwnam' in a C
program, the response is about 2-3 seconds to reply to a request.
Changing the nsswitch.conf file to not use the compat mode and the
response to the C program is instant.
Has anybody else had this problem, and is there a cure for it?

The systems is its own NIS server running version ypserv 1.3.0, and
ypbind version 3.3
The Kernel version is 2.0.32, with glibc version 2.0.5c

Thanks in advance,
    Hefin

Maybe you should look at the RH 5.0 Errata list ? Install the glibc,
portmap and ypbind update, and your problems should be solved. There
are good reasons for the update packages.

Linux is like a Vorlon.  It is incredibly powerful, gives terse,
cryptic answers and has a lot of things going on in the background.

1. NIS+ (compat mode) problem with NIS clients

Hi there

I installed a solaris 2.2 server with NIS+ (and NIS compatibility mode) and
Sun 4.1.3 NIS-Clients, HP NIS-Clients and some solaris 2.2 NIS+-Clients.

Now there is a nasty problem with the Sun 4.1.3 NIS-Clients.

Bug-ID: 1118688 -> Clients served by a nisplus server in compat mode can hang.

There is no official patch available from sun switzerland.
Are there any other solutions?

Thank you for your help!

Stefan
