network & cable modem problem

Post by zurich0.. » Mon, 11 Dec 2000 07:58:14

I have installed a RedHat 7.0 linux and trying to connect to my road
runner cable modem. While linux boots it errors out at eth0 "operation
failed".

When i type in ifconfig it shows
lo     Link encap: Local Loopback
       inet address 127.0.0.1 Mask 255.0.0.0
       -----------------
       -------------------------------

I have done a lot of search and found couple of websites and I tried as
they suggested. When i try the pump command the command returns with
message "operation failed" same for dhcpcd too but no message is
returned. I am stuck can someone let me know on how to get this
resolved. This is my first on any Unix platform.

This is a helper's newsgroup, so feel right at home.

My Roadrunner gives me a DHCP address.  Config your eth0 to be a DHCP
"recipient".  Config the eth1 (second nic) to be a static IP address and
config all the PC's behind it to be static.

Should work just fine.  You might want to create a hosts file in /etc and
list all the IP addresses on the network and correlate them with the PC's
name.

Good luck.

Doug

I am in the same boat as you. I've tried both pump and dhcpcd and with
neither can I convice Road Runner to give me an address. It works find
on NT 4.0 and MacOS 8.6, but Red Hat 6.1 fails with both clients. Out of
curiousity, which city are you in? I'm in Atlanta.

You can set eth0 to use dhcp by crossing the dhcp option in netconf. Also,
make sure you have a pump.conf in /etc/ and add the appropriate domains
you want your machine to search when resolving names to IP addresses. Look
at man page for pump.

Hope this helps,

Jaap
