Sniffit and TCPdump switch to promiscuous mode just fine.
However, I'd like to switch to promiscuous mode just to be able to use
accounting on an ethernet network.
How can I switch to promiscuous mode?

ifconfig ethX promisc will usually do the trick :-)

1. eepro100/2.2.19: failure when switching to promiscuous mode

Kernel 2.2.19, SMP, PIII-800
I've been seeing the eepro100 ethernet driver stop working when VMWare
puts it in promiscuous mode. /var/log/messages looks like this:
