Netscape 4.6 + JAVA -> freezes

Post by Nils Bluethge » Fri, 03 Sep 1999 04:00:00

Hello out there,

I have a question about NETSCAPE 4.6 / 4.61 and  JAVA. On some (not on
all!) of our computers (we run linux-RH6.0) Netscape freezes when I open
the URL

http://www.stadtplandienst.de/query;ORT=b;LL=13.420389x52.54105

with JAVA enabled. Without JAVA there's no problem,

I read about the wrong fontpath-settings, but this does
not seem to be the problem, since chkfontpath --list prints:

Current directories in font path:
1: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc
2: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled
3: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled
4: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
5: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo
6: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi
7: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi
8: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic
9: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mytype1
10: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ttfonts
11: /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1

I also upgraded to Netscape 4.61, which gave the same result. Has someone
an idea?

Nils

Hi !

It might have something to do with a bug in 4.61 concerning JavaScript Java
LiveConnect.
Check out if it  works with NS 4.5

I am going to be doing an upgrade to 6.0 from 5.2 and asked questions
about it.  One thing I was told is that 6.0 had a buggy Netscape but that
I would find an update on my CheapBytes disk.  I don't know if that is
your problem.  You might go to www.redhat.com  support and support search.
There are two separate searches, one specifically searches the question
and answers at support.  There well might be something on it there.

Good luck.

No, but FWIW the page loads OK with the NS 4.51+java+javascript that
installed along with SuSE 6.1. MY problem is that the stupid
spellchecker freezes it!  Oh yeah, other random things freeze it too.

Nicer looking map than mapquest...

Seems to work fine in Red Hat 5.2 with NS 4.61 with java/javascript enabled.

That's funny, I haven't been able to get Java to work on ANY version of
Netscape (Linux) above 4.05
(which I'm currently running).  Same for my friend at work and for our RH 6.0
box at work.  Go to any page with Java, the Browser crashes!

Robert,

Please share the fix, I've been all over RedHat's errata site and I can't find
anything remotely resembeling a fix for the Navigator + Java problem

To see if this is the problem you are facing, try:

 chkfontpath --list

You should get output that looks like the following:

 Current directories in font path:
 1: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled
 2: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled
 3: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled
 4: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc
 5: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
 6: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo

You should then add the 75dpi scaled font to your path list using the  command:

 chkfontpath --add /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi

This should fix the problem you are seeing.

In addition to the font fix, also make sure you have the following env
variable set (in your bashrc, for instance):

MOZILLA_HOME=/usr/local/netscape  export MOZILLA_HOME

(replace /usr/local/netscape with your path to your netscape
installation)

Hmmm, I don't have that set and it's working.  What does this variable do?  Just
wondering what other problems I'm having that I haven't noticed yet.

I had the same problem with NS 4.5! It was the main reason to update to
4.6. Neither 4.5 nor 4.6 is running perfectly with Java enabled. Some
Java applets will do and others will not. Try http://sydsvenskan.se with
Java enabled. This swedish newspaper has a Java programmed selection box
at the left side of their home page. Use it two to four times and the
communicator will hang. Switch off Java and try again. This "none-Java"
version works fine. This is only an example. I had the same problem with
other sites too. Using the communicator without Java since then.

BTW: I use NS 4.6, KDE 1.1 and SuSE Linux 6.1 (Kernel 2.2.5).

Has anybody already asked Netscape about the problem?

Regards to everyone

Wolfgang

I think this just sets the working directory for java.  Might only be a
problem for people with multiple installations of netscape (like me...).

Netscape 4.6 + JAVA -> freezes

Post by Dominic Maragli » Sat, 18 Sep 1999 04:00:00

Hello Wolfgang,

We have been seeing similar problems with users in the Silicon Valley Linux
Users Group -- there is in fact a bug in Netscape 4.5x -4.6 which causes
crashes with some Java code.  The only solution at the moment is to either
disable Java or downgrade to Netscape 4.08!

Good luck,

Dominic

1. Network problem causing Netscape 4.6 and 4.7 to freeze on start up

On Sat, 16 Oct 1999 14:43:00 +0100, "Noel Dillane, Home Account"

The people who write Netscape work in offices with leased lines and
they don't comprehend the requirements of dial up users.

If you run a network analyser, you can see that the problem is with
Netscape trying to do DNS searches, which won't work while you are
off-line.

I made the mistake of adding a news server entry in the news client
and this made Netscape freeze whenever I tried to start it up. The
only work around for me was to put fake entries in the /etc/hosts file
for the hosts that Netscape looked up on start up, but I then needed
to write a script to swap the fake host file with a real one when on
or off-line.
