Urgently needed: how to configure a Linux dummy interface

Post by Russell Tayl » Thu, 29 Jun 1995 04:00:00

I'm trying to set up a Linux dummy interface as a virtual host by assigning
it an ip number.  I'm stuck at the routing portion -- how do I set up
router (either on the host, the router, or both) to make the new IP
number reachable?   Fast response needed, as deadline pressure is
mounting :)

If you've ever configured a dummy interface for use as a virtual host,
PLEASE reply ASAP.  Thank you.

Urgently needed: how to configure a Linux dummy interface

Well, the 1st virtual host is up and working fine -- mostly.  I'm
having a small routing problem now. Since outside hosts couldn't
reach the virtual host, I added a line to the router's rc.boot file:
route add 198.68.3.150          198.68.3.131
          (virtual host)        (host IP)

However, naturally this hasn't solved anything on the local network,
since local traffic doesn't go through the router.  Have I made some
sort of error adding the virtual host?  (Having an arp entry didn't
seem to matter either way)  I can fix the problem with subnetting,
but I imagine there's an easier way to get the host to pick up traffic
for both IP numbers. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks again,
Russ Taylor

ftp sunsite.unc.edu
cd pub/Linux/Incoming
bin <-- :)
get ipalias.tgz

install that on a 1.2.0-->1.2.11 model and go

like ifconfig eth0 alias ###

takes care of it all

in your /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 file

DUMMYIP="XXX.YYY.ZZZ.ABC" # dummy

/sbin/ifconfig dummy ${DUMMYIP}
/sbin/route add -host ${DUMMYIP}

this should do it.

try

arp -s 198.68.3.150  <et:he:ra:dd:re:ss> pub
       (virtual host)  (Hardware address of the real host's ethernet card on the local network)

  This will "publish" the virtual host's IP address to the local lan, allowing other systems on the local LAN to associate the "virtual" IP address with the physical interface on the "real" host.

  The command ifconfig will tell you the hardware address you need.
