2.4.18 down to 2.4.9 bind problem RealTek 8139

2.4.18 down to 2.4.9 bind problem RealTek 8139

Hello,

I have the following problem.  In order to use MPLS Linux Emulator
http://www.ee.iitb.ac.in/uma/~mpls/ , I have to install a 2.4.9 kernel.  I'm
using RedHat 7.3.

The problem is the following.  Kernel compilation and installation worked
perfectly.  But, when booting with this kernel, network does no more work.
The kernel is compiled with RealTek 8139 built-in support, because I have
such a card, and I need a netword card for testing emulator (ping from
another box).

I can't even ping myself.  And I can't ping any other machine.  I did not
change anything to the configuration which work when booting with 2.4.18-10
standard kernel.  So the config work when booting with 2.4.18, but I want
network to work when booting with the old kernel.  I get the following
message when pinging localhost (or 127.0.0.1) or other computers :

BIND: cannot assign requested address

Where does it come from?  Thanks a lot.

O.D.
