Combining local + internet in one hub using dynamic IP

Combining local + internet in one hub using dynamic IP

Post by tomasbjorkl.. » Wed, 24 Jan 2001 11:57:51

First for those who read my other post about not being able to ping,
well I solved that. It turned out it was only a terminator that was
loose. I have no clue how it got loose since I hadn't touchted it.
Anyways...now I have a new problem.

I have two computers one RH7.0 and one Win98. I also have a broadband
connection (10 Mbps). I want to be able to access it from both
computers (no one will be constantly on) so I bought a hub. Well that
works great. Both computers get a separate IP address asigned to it
(it's dynamic) and are able to access the internet.

Now my real question is how I should do to share files between my
computers? I especially want to be able to play mp3s thats on the Win98
in linux but other stuff too. I really don't now much about this but my
guess is that the addresses being dynamic will be a problem. Am I right?

What options do I have? Samba, VPN (both?)? Maybe I have to add another
set of NICs to do local networking to (I already have one unused so I
only have to buy one more to put into the RH box)? Or can one NIC have
two IP addresses (one dynamic + one static)?

Thanks for helping a newbie with water over his head,

Combining local + internet in one hub using dynamic IP

Samba.
Windows networking shares uses SMB.  So, mosey on over to the linux
how-tos to see how to set up your Samba on your linux box.  (kinda
complex for a newbie, expect to spend a few days - fair warning)

Also, it sounds like you're appropriating two IPs direcly from your
broadband provider.  If that's true, then both your machines are
exposed on the internet.  Obviously that's a security issue.  Setting
up a samba server opens up even more (easier) ways to get into your
machines.

How important security is to you is your call =p.

But, if your linux machine is going to stay up, then I suggest another
configuration: for your linux box to act as a gateway/firewall
protecting your win98 machine.  Additional hardware required: another
eth card in your linux box.  Money saved: only need one ip address
from your provider.

There are PLENTY of docs and how-tos out there that describe how to
set this up.

1. Anyone using Mobile-IP combined with PPP and dynamic IP address ?

Has anyone tried to use Mobile-IP combined with PPP and dynamic IP
address ?
(maybe it's not possible at all)

I would like to integrate my Linux Workstation at home, connected via
PPP
and dynamic IP address to the internet, into the Linux network at work.
The network at work consists of a server with a register domaine name
and two
eth interfaces, one for the outside, and one for a local network.
IP-masquerade
is used to allow local workstations the internet access.  I would like
to see my workstation at home as one of these local workstations, if it
is
online.

I tried something with tunl0 interface (as described in NET-3-HOWTO),
but
i had no success.

Is there any way to do this ?

Thanks for any help!
