Upgrade RH 6.0->7.3 gives PPP problems

Post by David Raise » Wed, 27 Nov 2002 15:44:36

I tried setting up PPP autodial in RH7.3 no success.

So I went back to 6.0 to be sure that I was doing everything okay.  PPP
autodial works as I expected in 6.0.  So, I thought I'd upgrade from there
to 7.3 and hopefully I'd get past whatever problems I've had getting
autodial PPP working in 7.3.

No such luck.  Is there any known (I've searched and can't find) problems
with either PPP setup or running with RH 7.3?

Anyone have any ideas as to why autodial PPP would work for me in 6.0 and
not in 7.3 with a new install or with an upgrade?

TIA

I don't do RH (much), but 6.0 was a 2.2.x kernel. The 2.2.x driver
called "ppp" was renamed "ppp_generic" in 2.4.x. Perhaps you're not
loading the right driver? Just a wild guess.

Of course you read "man pppd" and enabled "debug" in your options? What
did the logs say? You could get more effective information by providing
some information in your post.

That's just it.  Everything appeared normal except it didn't work.  The log
showed it attempting to dial out and then nothing and the modem never picked
up the line.

However, I have since got RH 8.0 and it all works properly.  So, there must
be something off with RH7.3 or at least discs that I got.

Oh, there is one difference.  In RH6 when you ifup ppp0 it would dial out
immediately.  In RH8 it just waits until it actually has to send something
out before it dials.  Small difference but could stump a few people who
aren't expecting it.
