modem : USR 28.8 Fax Modem, script fails

Post by mike » Sun, 25 Jul 1999 04:00:00

I have a USR 28800 (external) Fax Modem with V.34 and V.32 bis. While
connecting, and tail -f /var/log/messages, I get:

send (ATDT (my ISP's phone number here))
expect (CONNECT)
^M
alarm
Connect script failed
Failed
Exit

I hear the modem dialling in, go silent, and about 10 seconds later I get
the failure. Being that this is an external modem, I tried configuring it
with USR's http://www.usr.com/modem/documents/10563.htm None of this seemed
to make a difference. Any suggestions for a configuration?

Presently I have the dip switches configured as:

1 DTR normal
2 Verbal Result Codes
3 Display Result Codes
4 Echo offline commands
5 Auto answer off
6 Carrier detect normal
7 Load NVRAM defaults
8 Smart mode

I have tried init strings, but did get anywhere with those either. I'm using
RH6.0 kernel 2.2.5-15, and using Linuxconf to do my configurations.

Thanks in advance,
-Mike

: send (ATDT (my ISP's phone number here))

The alarm is a timeout looking for the CONNECT string, so the modem didn't
send a CONNECT to the serial line or the CONNECT didn't get to the serial
line in time.  Posting the chat execution script and chat expect/send
script plus an exact copy of all the chat syslogd log messages complete
with timestamps might be useful.

Is CONNECT something my ISP sends, or is that a message the modem returns to
the script once it figures it has negotiated a connection?

I will dig back through the logs, and try to get you a typical failure...

The modem sends it once the negotiation is complete.

1. FAXing with efax and the USR Sportster 28.8 internal modem

I just downloaded and compiled efax but notice it does a lot of error
reporting when I attempt to fax with my USR 28.8 Sportster.  This seems
to be the best solution for the type of faxing I do.  I did notice that
the man pages do not say specifically that the USR sportster is
supported.  Are there other fax programs perhaps X based I should
consider?  I tried hylafax but gave up.  I would like one that I could
install on my standalone system and use as needed to fax various text and
graphic documents.  I do not have a network other than my ppp connection
to the internet.  I found one that was developed by the person who also
did PerfectBackup but his web page seems down.  Could someone tell me the
name of the program and whether its offered at some mirror or other ftp site?

Thanks.
