1. Help:Switched to redhat 4.1 and cannot get SLIP connection going anymore.
Hi
I have just switched to redhat 4.1 from Slackware 3.0, and I am fairly
familiar with linux, networking, kernels, etc.
My problem is:
I can not get the kernel to support SLIP or CSLIP. The reason that I
know that it is a kernel problem is that when I do "cat /proc/net/dev",
I get only:
lo: 0 0 0 0 etc.
There is no indication that I can support SLIP devices.
I CAN , suprisingly, invoke DIP and connect to my service provider. A
SL0 link appears to be set up but I am disconnected within 30 seconds,
and back to L0 (loopback) only.
I have tried the following:
1) Loaded all of the appropriate files in the installation.
2) Rebuilt the kernel to include SLIP and CSLIP support using "make
menuconfig".
3) make dep
4) make clean
5) make zImage
6) make modules
7) make modules_install
8) cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/zImage /boot/vmlinuz
9) lilo
10) reboot
When I boot up I do NOT see
"SLIP: version XXX-NET3.XX (4 channels)
CSLIP: code copyright 1989 Regents of the University of California"
Again, /proc/net/dev bears this out.
I do know that the reconfigured kernel is working to some degree because
I was able to get my soundcard to work.
What am I doing wrong with redhat that I found so easy to do with
Slackware.
Thanks
Tom
