Diald + SLIP slows down to a crawl

I tried diald 0.6 with SLIP, rather than PPP, on kernel 1.1.59.  It connects
OK, but whenever I try to transfer a file it goes slower and slower and slower
until eventually it just stops.  Happens for both ftp and http.  With a long
enough file, eventually it's silent for 5 minutes and my provider drops the
connection.  This doesn't happen with dip.

Should I try PPP instead, or is it maybe a kernel problem?

I haven't had a previous report of this kind of problem, nor have
I seen it, but I don't use SLIP except for testing purposes. If you
have PPP service available I would switch to that for now.
In the mean time I will try to duplicate this problem myself.
Can you tell me what MTU settings and other configuration options
you are using?

If anyone else has seen this problem please report it to me with
as much detail about your setup as possible.

1. NFS: When one server goes down, entire network slows down to a crawl.

I have this NFS problem where there is one server in the states connected
via NFS to my computer here in Canada.  When the US computer goes down, my
computer in Canada is pretty much locked.  I can't do anything.

Is this some sort of necessary evil I will have to put up with, or have I
configured the NFS wrong?  By the way, things are peachy when they are both
up and running... works really nice.

Thanks for any assistance you may be able to provide,

Gus
