multiple NICs, multiple IP addresses?

multiple NICs, multiple IP addresses?

Post by Robert Montan » Sat, 28 Jul 2001 00:56:51

(This is related to my problem titled "need help w/ 2 NICs and - ping,
portmap, NFS, ...")

If a machine has more than one NIC, must they be on different subnets?
 Say,
192.168.10.x  and  192.168.11.x  and so forth?  Or can they be on the
same
subnet (192.168.10.1  and 192.168.10.2)?

Is it possible for them to share a single IP address????

TIA, -bob,mon.

It would be wise for them to be on different subnets, but if needed they can
exist on the same subnet.  The only thing to watch out for is the routing
table as there will be two entries for how packets will get to the local
network.  You may want to remove one of the routes in this case.  Of course,
if you wanted multiple IP's to be handled on the same network, you could use
IP Aliasing where you can place a number of IP's on the same network card.

Commonly, you wouldn't want this to happen and it isn't really allowed.  Each
card normally has its own address, however there may be some approaches out
there which you can use to "bond" the two cards together to aggregate the
incoming bandwidth.

See ya

1. Changing IP address on Solaris 9 with multiple virtual IP addresses

Hi

We are running Solaris 9 and have configured the one physical NIC with
2 IP addresses allowing us to run 2 web servers and keep both on port
80. Is changing the IP address assigned to each host as simple as
changing the entries in /etc/inet/hosts or do I need to start messing
with ifconfig?

TIA

Robert
