Hi

I have a network made of 3 subnets - 96,97 and 98 - 97+98 being subs of 96.
When I give my Redhat 7  box an IP number from 97 or 98 it can ping within
that subnet but not outside - if I use a 96 number then everything is ok. I
have set the gateway correctly each time....any ideas?

I suspect there might be a problem with the nodes on the network but I can't
be sure as you didn't give any numbers, but lets assume the following:

Network Address: 192.168.96.0
Subnet Mask: 255.255.253.0
Network Numbers range from: 192.168.96.1 ---> 192.168.98.254
Gateway address should be something like: 192.168.98.254

I know that when we were looking at a ATM deployment, we had to create a
number of aliased gateways on the router to allow clients to think that they
were operating in a standard 255.255.255.0 network when in fact they were
operating in a 255.255.253.0 network.

If you can provide the values that you are using, you can hide the network bit
at the front :), then we might be able to spot the problem.

1. Redhat 5.2 subnet problems

I am using RH 5.2 Linux right out of the box
as a Firewall/Router on a P100
with 16Mb ram and 540 Hd.
running a firewall script from Hali Tower Darkover
Firewall design tool using ipfwadm,
and Tcp Wrappers.

I am masqing 2 other windowz 95 machines behind this firewall,
via a 5 port hub.
As of now I am still using an old script generated over a year ago
designed for use with 2 nic cards and it works Ok....

I am trying to figure out how to allow a 3'rd nic as a subnet, and
allow access to a NT4 Ftp and http server and make it available to the
outside world,
but still keep the firewall/router secure enough to protect the
internal network.

I have the routing tables working with out the ipfwadm script up and
running and all is sharing ok, but I have not tried to setup the Squid
Proxy yet.....

When I disable the Firewall Script or remove the cable from the
"card to card" re: Crossover cable and connect it to the hub inside
with a "straight through" cable behind the firewall I can Map the
drives on the NT box to the other machines re: 192.168.2.10,
192.168.2.20 and see them in the Network Neighborhood in the Win95
boxes....

Here is the setup:

eth0.......IP Via DHCP
eth1.......IP = 192.168.2.1              "Protected Internal Network"
eth2.......IP = 192.168.2.129           "Subnet"
the NT's card IP = 192.168.2.130

Kernel IP routing table

Is squid the answer to transparently redirect inquiries to the
external card, from the outside world, to the NT Server machine
through the subnet...?

Is this the most practical way to do this..?
