1. NULLS problem - affects smail and other things.

Hi All,

  Got a problem with NULLs showing up in most everything I do and so
far I have been unable to find how to cure it, either I am alone in
this or have just flat missed anything on this subject.

Overview:  Running a 386DX/40 with 8 Meg RAM, Linux 0.99pl15.  All
        gettys are currently agetty.

The Problem:  I get NULLS whenever I do most anything, but it only
        seems to affect scripted commands and stuff I cat or
        re-direct.

Specific example:  This shows up in searching the "uucp_neighbors"
router in smail.  smail "barfs" on the return from the following
statement:

        cmd=/usr/bin/uuname

When this is executed, it return the known systems names apparently
just fine when executed from the command line. Viz:

As a guess it looks like about 300+ NULLs are prepended to the data.
I haven't checked, but I'd guess that varies.  Whenever I edit files
created using cat or whatever, vi (sic) tells me about it.

This happens often and up until now, I have ignored the problem since
I couldn't find an easy answer :-).  

In this case, there is a possibility of getting into a nasty mail loop
with my smarthost since I am unable to determine who my uucp neighbors
are with this router failing due to the NULL problem.

Any ideas appreciated on this.  This is part of the project that will
replace the network host here with the Linuix box !
