Am I crazy

I want to use Linux as a firewall and router for my soon to be here xDSL.
The machine I'm installing it on will be stripped of any peripherals except
NIC and video.  I don't want to learn a new OS BUT I don't trust Windows to
be stable enough to do this job 24/7.  I've been reading about Linux on
newsgroups and other sources and it reminds of the early days of IBM
compatibles in that you need to configure your hardware manually (to some
degree at least) and you use line commands or shell overlays.  Is it
possible to set up a Linux box with this limited use and NOT invest months
in learning the OS?   Thanks.

It's one of Linux's stronger points.  I've even heard about a Linux
router that runs off a single floppy, (never looked into that though)
with out a hard drive.

So far, I have found Caldera's OpenLinux 2.3 easiest to set up, start
with looking up IP Masquerading, TCP Wrapper, and ipfilter.  There are
plenty of howto's etc. on using these, and if you can follow
instructions; they just work.  Though, don't be afraid to learn Linux,
it's not that bad.  You will need to know the basics to find and edit
files and such.

Happy routing

Check out www.freesco.org

It is a great linux router, with virtually no knowledge needed to install or
configure.  You can use it without a hard drive, on a 486 with 16 meg of
ram....or less

Have fun with it.

Thanks. I tried to install Redhat Linux several times.  Installs would work
but the machine wouldn't boot either with LILO or from the floppy (different
problems).  Freesco looks like a winner and runs on my machine fine.  Many
thanks you saved me.

1. am I crazy?

First of all... I'm a newsgroup newbie.. so I appologize if this ended
up in the wrong spot.

Now.... I have a Pentium 100 with one drive occupied by DOS and windows
3.11 and another drive occupied by more files/programs/etc.  Am I crazy
to want to add FreeBSD to this setup as another OS?  Do you think it
will create a lot of problems?  What's the chance I'd loose data on the
C drive or muck up my computer if I repartitioned the D drive and
attempted to put FreeBSD there? (if it's possible to put freeBSD on the
second drive??)

If I can get away with having these two things co-exist I'd like to do
it rather than blow money on a 486 just so I can have a UNIX box to play
with.

Thanks,
any info would be great,
Zach
