Migrating Windows Client/Server setup to Linux

Post by Tim Gu » Wed, 04 Dec 2002 20:11:35

I'm interested in changing our Windows network over to Linux completely but
haven't got a clue where to start.

As I have it set-up now. Windows 2000 workstations and servers in domain/AD
mode.

Users logon with a network username to connect to a home areas mapped to
drive letters, common areas map to drive letters, also some users are locked
down with GPOS/Policies.

Is there a good FAQ anywhere to start in the right direction. As I know
Linux, you have local user names and password, or infact server usernames
and password and terminal/X windows clients using the Servers processing
power. Where as I want a server, with connected clients, running local
programs with network user names, ideally with roaming policies so I cant
lock down what people can and cant do, default proxy servers, etc.

Is this pie in the sky stuff for a newbie? I know Linux from a Windows Admin
looking in point of view. I've configured Linux boxes for squid, routing,
etc but that's about as far as I've gone.

Cheers

Tim

That should get you started.

Not sure exactly what you want.  Samba running on linux can act as a
Windows domain server, so your Win2k clients can mount their home
directories/Windows profiles from a linux server and run Win programs
locally on their workstations.  Is that what you mean?

Thanks, I will start my quest!

So is the best alternative to have a very big server with X windows (or
equivalent) clients and central processing? Rather than having Linux
workstations, running local processing, storing central data on servers?

Is it possible to take Linux into networking in this environment?

Remote processing, with roaming network users being able to login to and map
central data from a common GUI that can be tailored and locked down as
required

I ideally want to dump Windows altogether and mimic a Windows Client /
Server environment

IE Client processing, with roaming network users being able to login to and
map central data from a common GUI that can be tailored and locked down as
required

If you want to start on the server side immediately without learning
a lot of Linux details you can probably drop the distribution from
http://www.e-smith.org in as a replacement for the win2k server
using only the fill-in-the-form web interface.

For a full conversion, http://www.k12ltsp.org would be a good
starting point.   It is basically a RedHat 7.3 with some additions
for school use, but schools aren't much different than any other
LAN so it will have what you need already installed.

1. Communication needed between linux server/client to windows client/server

Dear Linux Pros,

I want my linux system see the window 98 file system, but don't know how.
Is there any windows Linux service program or equivalent program out there
that windows can serve files to a Linux machine.

My window cannot log into my Linux neither.  I was able to run telnet and
connect to the linux system using the IP address.  The prompt comes up
nicely, but the login is refused saying password is incorrect as I try to
log in as root.

Thanks much.
