PPP almost perfect need some help

Post by Joe Cho-Ming Che » Sat, 31 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I am a new Linux user and I have problem connecting to my ISP using PPP.
I like to share my problem with PPP with some experts and see if any
expert in this group can help me (or am I posting in the right group)

I use minicom to login to my ISP, then press ALT-Q to quit w/o*
up, then I type

pppd /dev/modem /38400 ebug crtscts modem defaultroute asynmap 0 mtu 552
mru 552

and then load X.

in X, I load netscape and now the problem exists.

Either netscape loads (30% of the time) or it gives two error messages
sometimes 'Bus Error' or sometimes 'Error in malloc' and I have no idea
about what the errors are. Okay and if netscape loads, after a couple of
minutes netscape will tell me that I am out of memory and ask me to quit,
or it just quits (i mean the whole X window quits) w/o reason and said in
the shell that 'Fatal Error' and 'Out of Memory'.

I have 12mb RAM and I don't think that is not enough; in Win95 that's
more than enough for me to surf the net for 6-7 hrs. I also tried Mosaic
for Linux but first of all it sucks compared to Netscape, and secondly it
stil gives me out of memory problems.

Now I really want to know what I need to do in order to get PPP working.
oh the other text-based programs such as telnet and ftp works, except
that I can't send out any mail using pine. Can anyone tell me what I need
to do with pine to send out messages?

Thank you in advance

Joe

How much Swap space do you have BTW?  12Mb is not that much.. really not
much.. when you are using big App like Netscape.  They uses a lot
memory.

1. PPP: almost there, need help

When I dial my ISP, it seems I am getting a connection.  When I bring up
Lynx to browse, it cannot find any locations.  I turned on debug in pppd
and watched the messages file.

These are the last few messages I get in the message file:

localhost pppd[1566] Serial connection established
localhost pppd[1566] Using interface ppp0
localhost pppd[1566] Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
localhost pppd[1566] local IP address 209.208.231.124
localhost pppd[1566] remote IP address 209.208.231.26
localhost kernel: IPX "followed by some stuff about IPX"
localhost kernel: Appletalk "followed by some stuff about appletalk"
localhost pppd[1566]: CCP: timeout sending Config-Requests

Any help or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
