A network newbie....

third is assigned 24.24.109.99. the three computers all connected
through hub,hub conncets to the cable modem. my questions are:

1. can the third computer shared with the other two? i doubt it
because it doesn't fall into the 24.24.24.##. please give me some
basic idea can let me start from.

2. does that mean other people with 24.24.24.## can see our network?

3. I have one more computer( running windows ME) behind one of the
computer( acts as gateway, IP Masquerading and Internal DHCP server
are running) i mentioned above. For newsgroup , I have no problem to
retrive the group list by MS outlook through my isp news server. but i
can not download any articles from the group. why ?

Many Thanks

Nothing is stopping all three using the same cabling. The netmask may
stop all three participating in the same broadcast, so SMB might need
tweaking.

see in the of routing to the 3 IPs yes, but you won't get traffic not
for you as the cable modem is a router.

NAT has no problem with NNTP, the information flows along the same
connection so what OS is the NAT and use something like tcpdump or
ethereal to monitor NNTP connections on it using the external IP as the
monitoring point.

If you can ping it, you can access it, provided your ISP isn't blocking
NetBIOS.  If you want to share files & printers, you can
NetBIOS/NetBEUI, instead of NetBIOS/IP.  This will make sharing visible
to every computer on the hub and prevent others from seeing it.

If you're running NetBIOS/IP, possibly.  In fact, the whole world might
be able to, unless NetBIOS is blocked by your ISP.

1. I'm sure someone can explain this one.

Hi,
The etc/services file contains all the service ports relating to a
particular unix box...some standard, some not standard.  I have an
application which is reporting (cannot open channel to local controller)
and drilling into it's debug messages it reports that (it cannot start
an IPC for port 7600).

My question is...
What state can a port be in?  I presume it is either open or closed.

anyone with info could really help me.
