PPPoE problem: sorry we died

I'm trying to configure my linux (it's a SuSE 6.3) for ADSL with PPPoE
V0.3 by Jamal Hadi Salim, buit I get an error message that I can't
understand.

Before I start pppoed, ifconfig shows the following output:

eth1    Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:CC:55:B4:58
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1482 Metric:1
        RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
        TX packets:30 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
        collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
        Interrupt:3 Base address:0x7800

lo      Link encap:Local loopback
        inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1482 Metric:1
        RX packets:16 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
        TX packets:16 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
        collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

Then I start /usr/sbin/pppoed -F /etc/ppp/options -I eth1
and get the following output:

I have connected my eth1 network device to the ADSL modem the same way
I did it with the win98 machine I have (which works fine). I also
realized, that the /etc/ppp/options file is never read during this
process. Maybe it will be read after a successfull discovery?

Has anyone an idea why pppoed dies?

Michael.

pppoed dies because it does not get a reply to the discovery packets.  If it
worked, that reply would tell pppoed the MAC of the line card at the central
office, as well as the session number.

I only have this problem when the other side is down, but since you say that
the Win98 machine works, that can't be the problem.

You might want to try the 0.4 version of pppoed, I think one of the 0.3
versions had a bug with malformed discovery packets.

And you properly configured /etc/ppp/pap-secrets?
I remember getting such error when I *forgot* to write down proper password
there.

I found that bug. The cable was not propperly connected to the network
interface. Anyway thank you.
