No header compression in PPP????

No header compression in PPP????

Post by Tony Sarathchand » Wed, 03 May 1995 04:00:00

Hi,
I recently reinstalled linux after a major crash, and after
managing to get PPP up and running again am running into some difficulty.

The main problem is that PPP performance seemed to have halved compared to
my old setup. Okay I'll admit I am not running a blazingly fast modem,
I use a 2400, but ftp transfers only get
about 60 bytes/second when I used to get around 170bytes/sec with a single
connection . I have tried a number of local sites, so that isn't it.
Telnet sessions are just as slow.

I have also noticed that sometimes when I run pppstats there is no
header compression being done, so this may be the reason, but as far as I can
tell header compression should be on by default. I does do it sometimes but
very occationally. I always connect to the same gateway so there should not be
a problem there.

I am running kernel 1.2.3 with PPP version 0.2.7. I used to run Linux
1.1.94, so is there some option that I have missed in the kernel compile?
I run PPP with the following options:

pppd connect 'chat -v "" ATDTXXXXXXX CONNECT "" -f login ' \
/dev/cua2 2400 mru 296 mtu 296 debug crtscts modem defaultroute
XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:

I realize it is a little hard to suggest anything to such a vague problem,
but could someone at  least give me a few things to check for, or maybe
point me in the right direction as I am completely clueless.

Many Thanks,

Tony

I can't help you with what has changed, but here's some
things to check.

Have you tried setting asyncmap ?  If you don't, pppd will escape
all control characters (sending 2 bytes to transmit 1).  If your
link is 8 bit clean, set asyncmap to 00000000, otherwise you need
to set some of the bits to represent which control chars to
escape.  A common setting is "asyncmap 200a0000" and "escape 7e"
which allows telnet and rlogin to be used in the link.  Also, you
might set mtu and mru a little larger, say 552, for better speed
at the expense of extra latency through the link.

Hope this helps,

Rob Smith

1. ppp header compression

Are there any alternatives to the bsd_comp.o module available??

I'm using kernel 2.0.30

My ISP mentioned, that BSD compression was an early alternative to
something called "VJ compression" or "StackLZ", which they now use.

Is this available for Linux?
