getties & minicom,seyon,pppd etc.: ARGH !

                           Hi volx !

The getties drive me nuts. Every getty with its certain problem =:(.
( Yes, I've read the serial-how2 )
What I want is have any getty watch the modem serial port and connect
on an incoming call. The getty should also let programms like minicom,
seyon and pppd open the serial port ( /dev/cua<X> ! ). So these are
my experiences. ( Tested one after the other, and not all together of
course )

agetty: Doesn't pick the phone up, But lets minicom etc. open /dev/cua1.
------

/etc/initab:
d2:45:respawn:/sbin/agetty -mt60 38400,19200,9600,2400,1200 ttyS1 vt100

mgetty: Works fine so far, but doesn't let minicom etc. open
------  /dev/cua1.

/etc/inittab:
d2:45:respawn:/usr/sbin/mgetty -D ttyS1

getty+uugetty: Segfaulting with kernel-2.0.0 & libc-5.2.18 =:(
--------------

Any idea's ?

First thing:
If you want to share the port: mgetty, fax, dial-in, you *cannot* use
/dev/cua1.  That is an exclusive open port.  (for selfish things like the
mouse)

I use mgetty on 1.99.14 (compiling 2.0.2 as we speak) for:
  dial-in: login, slip, ppp, fax
dialout: minicom, xc, slip, ppp, sendfax
All on a single class-2 faxmodem.

/etc/inittab
=============

on...\n\n\rlogin: " -n1 -i/etc/issue.modem -s38400 ttyS1

Make sure that mgetty and the comm programs use the same lock dir.
I have /var/spool/locks -> /var/spool/uucp

Don't use agetty because it likes to keep the port open.  mgetty monitors
the port for activity.

Ah.  Use /dev/ttyS1 in minicom and all should be well.

Good luck.

I use agetty with no problems.  When I switched to it I had to make a
change in the /etc/default directory for the serial port to configure
the modem.

<agetty driving me nuts too>

Strider,

Seems like your got remote dialin access working, if so, could you
please let me in on it, cause I'm having major problems trying
to configure it to work properly just as a dumb terminal connection.

I've modified the "inittab" as shown below:
#
d2:45:respawn:/sbin/agetty -mt60 38400,19200,9600,2400,1200 ttyS1 vt100
#

My modem is an internal (PC modem) on COM1:

Something was mentioned about the /etc/defaults directory files, what
needs to be done there to the agetty.ttyS1?

Do I need to modify the /etc/securettys (or is it the /etc/ttys) to include
the ttyS1?

I'm able to get the modems to connect and negotiate a speed but it seems
to just sit around waiting for something else to happen......

I've configure my modem to autoanswer after 5 rings (ats0=5)....

So I guess I've left something out that I'm not quite sure about.

Any help would be much appreciated, please email response to:

1. getty with Seyon/Kermit/Minicom/etc.

Hello world,
This might seem like a stupid question, but I'm running getty on
my modem (/dev/ttyS0) so it will answer the phone when I get calls.
I also, however, use the modem to call out with seyon, kermit, etc.
How can I, without reediting my inittab file, temporarily get rid of
my getty process so I can use seyon, then reenable it when I'm done?

                                     Thanks
