eth1 not recognized at boot

eth1 not recognized at boot

Post by jc.. » Thu, 03 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Hi all,
Any guidance is appreciated.

Running RH6.0, kernel 2.2.5-15, with 2 PCI Intel EtherExpress NICs
(using eepro100).  My idea is to bind eth0 to TCP/IP & eth1 to IPX. My
problem is while the eth0 interface is recognized at boot-up, eth1 is
not.  Also, eth0 is assigned an IPX address which I don't want to
happen.

I am able to login as root:
ipx_interface delall
ipx_interface add -p eth1 802.2 00008022
and ncpmount to mount a NetWare directory on the Linux box.  But I'd
really like to automate that process.

How do I: 1.get eth1 recognized at boot/  2.stop the IPX address
assignment to eth0 / 3.automate that process.

I checked the BOOTUP and ETHERNET HOWTOs and couldn't find my answer.

What am I missing?
Jim

Look under /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/.  You should find a file
called "ifcfg-eth0".  Copy it to ifcft-eth1, and edit to fit the
interface you want to be eth1.  That should take care of the
eth1-at-boot problem.  Not sure how to fix any of your IPX stuff, but
that might be easier once you have the system booting in the shape you
want.

1. Not Recognising eth1

Okay, I have two identical ne2000 cards in my computer. They are both
Linksys Ether16 ISA cards. The first one, eth0, has been running fine for
6 or 7 months, it uses I/O 0x300 and IRQ 3.

I just installed eth1, and I'm having some problems. According to Linksys'
website, I need to take the card out of PnP mode. I did that by booting to
DOS with a floppy and running the Linksys setup program. PnP was telling
the second card to use I/O 0x2A0 and IRQ 11. So I switched off PnP and set
those values manually. (I kept them the same, I just turned PnP off)

I rebooted into Linux and edited /etc/conf.modules, per the "Red Hat Linux
6.X as an Internet Gateway for a Home Network" HOWTO on Linuxdoc.org. My
conf.modules reads:

alias eth0 ne
alias eth1 ne
options ne io=0x300,0x2A0 irq=3,11

ifconfig still tells me that eth1 is not found. If I reboot the machine,
eth1 fails to initialize on boot.

Can anyone provide help?
