very strange problem - localhost -> myplaceontheweb.com??

Post by Dan Nordqui » Mon, 05 Nov 2001 16:54:10

Hi there... I just installed RedHat 7.2 today and have had pretty good
luck.  However, one kind of spooky thing caught my attention: sometime
this afternoon, my system began greeting me with "Welcome to
myplaceontheweb.com" instead of "Welcome to localhost".  I haven't
done a thing to the network settings, and I only even learned of the
"hostname" command in looking for a solution to this problem (if it is
a problem)...

So how did it get switched?  How do I switch it back?

Very strange...

Whatever you are using to get an internet IP (pppd, dhcp) likely has a
setting about whether you want it to change your hostname to the name for
that IP, or not.  So set it to not to, and change it back (with the
hostname command and in one of the scripts under /etc/sysconfig.

If it changes on the fly when you are running X as localhost and then it
changes to myplaceontheweb.com, it can cause problems for X programs,
because they may not have permission (xhost setting) to connect from that
other host.

Very interesting.  It's actually an external DSL hookup, so I had no idea my
IP resolved to that domain.  Strange, but somehow logical. :)

Oh I know all about that: I tried to change it back to "localhost" and ended
up crashing X entirely.  No fun.

Thanks for helping me out!

1. fixing localhost -> DNS Server -> NAMED -> NDC -> NOTFOUND

I'm trying to make localhost work in netscape (instead of routing to
http://www.localhost.com as it does now) on Redhat 6.2 system on a local
lan connected to external internet via netopia analog router).

I set up a hosts file to define localhost as an alias for
localhost.cox.dom (internal fake names). While that once worked, I
touched something somewhere and it no longer does.

By following the cryptic syggestions at www.localhost.com, I decided I
needed to set up a DNS server for the local lan (8 machines) via
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/DNS-HOWTO-3.html under "A caching only
name server">

All went well til the section "Starting named", which says type
"/usr/sbin/ndc start". There's nothing there by the name ndc, nor under

thing called under Redhat 6.2?

Or is setting up DNS the wrong thing altogether? I'm basically trying to
get a combined Windows 2000 Server, Linux, and Macintosh combined
network to cooperate.
