what do you mean with incompatible?
if it is recognized at bootup
(you get a message with the irq, and the macadress),
it works under linux
(as do most nics,afaik).
if you cant ping anything but localhost,
see that your network is configured to work.
if you want help with that,
send more info:
-what does ifconfig -a tell you?
-whats the setup of your network (other machines, which adresses you
use)?
-netstat -n might help as well.
