D-Link DFE-530TX 10/100 PCI network card not supported by Redhat 6.0

Post by Nicholas Bennet » Tue, 05 Oct 1999 04:00:00

I got the Cheapbytes CD for Redhat 6.0, and almost everything installed fine
except for networking support for my NIC, a D-Link DFE-530TX 10/100 PCI
card. It works very well in Windows 98, but apparently there is no support
in Linux yet. I tried NE2000, NE1000 (though that's ISA, right?), and all of
the 3Com options, but none of them worked. I have some technical knowledge,
but not enough to write a driver for my card. I've had the same problem with
SuSE 6.1. Do you know if there is support for this card in any form, or if
there's something special I can do in the installation to get it set up? I
might even consider running linux primarily if I were to get this working.

Thanks,
Nick Bennett

There is Linux support.  The D-Link DFE-530TX board uses the VIA Rhine
chipset, so you need to specify the via-rhine driver.  I'm using one of
these as the link between my Linux box and my DSL modem.

Hi Nick..
Boot from a dos floppy and configure your card for 0x300, IRQ 10.
I'm fairly certain that the NE2XX driver/module will work.

You're probably thinking of a different D-Link model; they've got several
with annoyingly similar model numbers, but radically different designs.
The DFE-530TX is a 10/100 PCI model that uses the VIA Rhine chipset.
AFAIK, it is *NOT* NE2000-compatible.  Even if it were, I'd use the VIA
Rhine driver, since it's more specific to the model in question.

Well for even more confused info to add the 530TX says right on the back
with that stupid logo NE2000 Compatible. I have never tried it but I would
say use the other more specific driver.

via-rhine.o is the appropriate module for that card.

This is not directed to you Nicholas, so nothing personal, but:

Jeez, does this ng need a FAQ or what!?   :-)

"530TX" is an incomplete designation.  The original post was about the
DFE-530TX.  I've got one of these, but I no longer have the box it came
in.  I do, however, have the manual, and there's no mention of NE-2000
compatibility in either the "features" or "specifications" sections (I'm
not going to read the whole manual looking for it, though).

Now, if you confirm that you have the DFE-530TX and not some other board
with a similar model number (DE-530TX, DFE-530CT, or some such), and that
it's labeled as being NE-2000-compatible, then one of three things is
true:

1) The board is NE-2000-compatible AND is built around the VIA Rhine
chipset.  I'd still recommend using the Linux VIA Rhine driver in this
case, because it's the more specific option.
2) D-Link changed the design of the board without changing the model
   number.  Stranger things have happened.
3) The box is mis-labeled.  You might want to check your manual to help
   clarify the matter.

You have got to love them D-link marketing people. :) They have two totally
different NICs, one with Via's Rhine chipset and one with Realtek 8029(NE2000
compat.), and they name one DFE530TX and the other DE530TX. Thanks for confusing
thousands and thousands of linux users!!... :-)

I just need help where are you getting a DE530TX? There are no drivers at
dlink.com nor a product decription? there is DE530CT and DEF530TX but no
DE530TX.

I got the via3043.c source file for the driver and compiled it... but it
does not seem to be up to date. I may have to spend some time modifying the
file.. If anybody out there has already done the necessary modifications to
this file or have the compiled .o file can you please email it to me.

btw for NiPs... you can get the source driver for the DFE-530TX from the
following site but unfortunately you will run into the same problems with it
as I have when installing it on RedHat 6.0.. let me know if you resolve
them.

Eventually I will check it out but as of right now this card isn't in a
linux box but may be soon just depends on weather I need a different net
setup when I switch to adsl. Cause my cable is free to have up to 8 othe
comps and so no nat's or anything.

  The DFE-530, a PCI 10/100 board, uses a VIA "Rhine-II" vt86c100 chip.

The VIA Rhine is not NE2000 compatible.  It's completely different.

Use the via-rhine driver already in your distribution.
(It may not be listed due to a RedHat oversight.)

  Updated versions are at
    http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/ethercard.html
    ftp://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/linux/drivers/via-rhine.c

>I got the via3043.c source file for the driver and compiled it... but it

Do *not* use the driver named via3043.c
Use  via-rhine.c
