Netatalk 1.4b2 and Samba problem

Post by Macbrus » Sun, 27 Sep 1998 04:00:00

I am running a very generic RedHat 5.1 with Tekram 390U SCSI controller,
and a NE2000 PCI compatible network card on a K6-200 machine. Nothing much
installed. Everything works fine after the initial installation and
configuration. I could telnet in and out, make network connection... etc.

Problem 1: After installing Netatalk1.4b2, my Macs, and PCs (with PC
MacLAN) could see the linux box, but whenever I tried to logon, the chooser
display "The connection to server was unexpectedly broken." Anyone came
across this problem? Is there a fix?

Problem 2: After running the Samba and fliddling around with the domain
name... etc. I got my PCs (running Win98) see the linux box inside the
network neighbour thing. When I try open it by double clicking, it ask me
for a password (note: password ONLY, no field for user name). I am sure I
already entered a correct username and password at the initial startup of
Win98. What's the catch?

Thank you very much in advance!

Kenneth

Howdy,

I and others have been through this one in the last week... someone
kindly advised me that the RPM you probably got is cactus.  Download
this one from http://rufus.w3.org/linux/rpm and you'll be apples
(sorry)...

netatalk-1.4b2+asun2.0a18.2-phh4

See ya...

Netatalk 1.4b2 and Samba problem

I've working on a new standard responce for this one. It follows:

Later, Markus.

---
READ THIS FIRST:

Remember to uninstall your versions of Netatalk if it is a broken version
before installing the one below. To uninstall (as Root):

1. issue "rpm -qa" to get the listing of all the RPMs installed.
Netatalk should be near the bottom if it is a recent install.
   Note the exact name.
2. issue "rpm -e --test <netatalk_rpm_name>" to ensure it will uninstall
   without a problem.
3. issue "rpm -e <netatalk_rpm_name>" to uninstall.

If you have several Netatalks listed in the RPM listing, repeat the above
steps till they are all cleared out. Then, install the version below for
Redhat 5.1.

THEN, SAVE YOURSELF SOME SERIOUS HEADACHE. READ THE FOLLOWING:

In a nutshell, many people have been able to install Netatalk for Redhat
5.x and log into the server as "Guest" just fine from a Macintosh or
compatible. But, if you log in a registered user with a password, when the
Mac is waiting for authorization any number of things happen: Lock the
Mac, Fail authentication or Timing out.

Many though it was possible shadowed passwords or the Redhat enhanced
password  feature.  It still may be so, but for those using a standard
installation, you now have a solution.

I've been in correspondence with Randy <snip> about setting up Netatalk
and my experiences.  Well, Randy pulled across the finish line before I
did.  Here it is folks, to quote the e-mail and spread the Netatalk
gospel:

Ahh, all is now clear.  The rpm package in the contrib directory is
broken. There is a correct rpm to use,

ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/contrib/grouped/glibc/i386/Networking/
    netatalk-1.4b2+asun2.0a18.2-phh4.i386.rpm

    that works very well.

I'm hoping that you can tell others about this.  It sure took alot of my
    time to figure out.

    -Randy

A big THANK YOU SO MUCH to Randy for his valuable time.  I've tried it and
it works. The general responce is the same from other RH5.1 users/admins.

If you need help configuring netatalk, swing by The Hamptons for the rest
of the setup. ( http://thehamptons.com/atalk.html ) Just skip their install
info. Focus on the /etc/atalk files and the /etc/rc.d/init.d/atalk file.
(Remember to make backup copies first.) For the fastest response, post to
the Linux group "comp.os.linux.networking" if you need more help.

Hasta, Markus.

Netatalk 1.4b2 and Samba problem

Mark,

This solution is all well and good for people using RedHat.  However, some
of us who grew up on Slackware have the same problem.  How do I use this
wonderful RPM package on slackware?

Phil

There's a HOWTO on how to get Slackware to use RPM. It's called the
RPM+Slackware Mini-Howto.

I hope this helps. Hasta, Markus.

1. Q: Netatalk 1.4b2 and MacOS 8 printing problem

Hi there

I'm using netatalk 1.4b2 on my Linux system since more than half a year.
Everything works fine. I have connected two Macintoshes to my Linux box
over ethernet.

A few days ago I installed Mac OS 8 on one of my Macintoshes. The
problem I have now is, that I can't install my printer, which is
connected to the Linux box, by selecting it in the Chooser of my Mac.
The printer is working perfectly from my other Mac running under System
7.6.x.

Is there anybody out there with the same problem or any hint what I
could try to fix it?

best regards,
Lorenz
