Linux gateway between registered & non registered IP

Linux gateway between registered & non registered IP

Post by Ian Packe » Tue, 19 Dec 1995 04:00:00

Dear Whoever Reads,

I want to setup Linux as WWW Server and Mail host with a regsiterd IP
and allow access from a local LAN which uses non-registered IP
addresses.

The local LAN users must be able to access the Linux Web Server and pick
up their mail etc. Non local users must also have access via Internet. I
would also like the local non-registered users to be able to access the
Web using the Linux box as a proxy.

Is this possible?

Regards
Ian Packer.

Works like a charm.  All you need is SOCKS and 1 IP address.  Install SOCKS on
the Linux box and connect to the Internet with the registered IP.  The
ethernet adapter uses the 192.168.x.x addresses internally.  If the LAN
machines are of the PC type, use Eudora as a POP mailer.  The only things that
will not work are UDP sessions like, talk and Archie.  Web, mail, news, ftp
and telnet will all work fine.

1. Using IP Masq on a non-registered 129.64.100 network

The previous net admin here at work setup up our network with IP address
in the class C subnet 129.64.100.0.  Unfortunately this subnet is not
registered and is not valid on the Internet.  I have tried setting up IP
Masq thru a Linux box but it doesn't like anything but 192.168 or
10.0...etc.  Is there anyway to implement this without changing our
whole netowork to valid IP addresses (192.168). This of course is not
feasible.  Thanks for you help.
BTW, we are currently using MS Proxy 2.0 and it is horrible.  Please
save me from this mess!
