HELP! NE2000 Ethernet card won't work!

HELP!

I've been struggling for weeks with getting a small LAN configured. I
have two Macs and a Linux box. The Linux box is connected to the Internet
via a dedicated (24 hours/day) 28.8 SLIP connection. The two Macs
are connected via thin ethernet to the Linux box. Both Macs can see
each other fine and share files, etc., but the Linux box is dead as
far as ethernet is concerned. The SLIP connection to my ISP works
perfectly. I've tweaked and poked and recompiled the kernel time
after time, but I can't get a single packet in or out of the Linux
box's ethernet card.  I've run TCP/IP packet sniffers on both Macs,
and there's no sign of life from the Linux box, no matter what I do.

When I test the card using the diagnostic software it shipped with, it
tests out fine, and there are no IRQ or address conflicts.

I'm using RedHat 2.x with a 1.3.71 kernel. Everything else (except
my sound card, which is another annoyance) works flawlessly.

Does anyone know if the 1.3.71 kernel has any NE2000 driver problems,
or if a later kernel has any updates/extensions/refinements to the
NE2000 driver???

The kernel reports the following upon boot:

   NE*000 ethercard probe at 0x300: 00 40 33 3a dd 86
   eth0: NE2000 found at 0x300, using IRQ 4.

ifconfig reports the following:

1. Linux 1.2.13 won't recognize GVC ethernet card (in NE2000 or WD8013 mode)

I'm adding a new system to an existing network; a 4Mb 486/33 with a single IDE hard
drive, i/o card (2s/1p), vga video, 1.44Mb floppy, and a GVC NIC-2003BT ethernet
card. I loaded the net boot disk (slackware) and the "A" and "N" series. All the
software seems ok, but I cannot get linux to recognize the ethernet card. IFCONFIG
returns errors (unknown server) and I get "SIOCSIFADDR: No such device" errors when I
reboot.

I've tried adding APPEND = "ether=5,0x300,eth0" (and played with variations of
settings and even using the RESERVE= line, but all to no avail.

Any guidance/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
